When it comes to putting together a serious Home Theatre you still cannot go past a projector (unless you are willing to splash out on the 103” Panasonic plasma.) The sheer size draws you into the experience, and the quality has improved so rapidly over the last few years that you can now enjoy cinema like performance for a very affordable outlay.
Without doubt some of the best value projectors in recent times have come from JVC. Their D-LIA panel has now been adopted by a few other companies, but still no-one has been able to get the performance for the $ that JVC has been able to achieve with this technology.
There are currently two models, the DLA-HD950 – retailing for $8,999, and the DLA-HD550 which retails for $6,499. There are a lot of projectors out there that cost considerably more than these – but offer very little in the way of improvement (if any.) The HD950 is an exceptional unit for the money. It has all the right specs – 50,000:1 contrast ratio and is certified by both ISF and THX – but the real proof is in the viewing. The JVC units are incredibly film-like, and surely this is the ultimate goal.
The other manufacturer also offering exceptional value in this market is Mitsubishi. While their projectors may not quite match it with the JVC’s in terms of performance, they are less expensive, and offer the same amazing value for money – possibly even more so.
Mitsubishi have traditionally manufactured LCD projectors and the HC6800, selling for $4,500, is no exception. Their surprise product though is the HC3800, a High Definition 1300 ANSI Lumens DLP projector that sells for $2,999. You really must have a look at this unit just to see how far projection has come in the last few years. At the time of writing we have a Vidikron Helius DLP projector in our s/hand section. This unit was once the darling of the projector industry and sold for $25,000 (you can have this one for $250) – the HC3800 Mitsubishi absolutely runs rings around it.

Hi Paul,
The HC3800 is now finished, with the HC4000 being the replacement. Like the HC3800 it is a single chip DLP, full HD with 1300 Ansi Lumens.
Price $2,999.
The JVC retails for $6,500, but we are selling them for $4,999. This is an excellent projector for the money.
