Hi Peter,
Yamaha have a very respectable A/V receiver – RXV-365 – RRP. $599. I could supply you one for $449.00 (plus $10.00 shipping.) Rated at 100 watts/channel.

One of the best at the momnet is the Marantz PM5003. This is rated at 40 watts RMS, is very well built and sounds great given the price. Marantz are on a bit of a roll at the moment, and this is a good indication as to why. It would cost you $549.00.

Hi Anthony,
Yamaha is still a great choice if you are looking for a receiver that does both movies and music well. There are a couple of receivers that you should consider.
RXV-1065: retails for $1,899
RXV-3900: retails for $2,999. This is a very popular unit, despite being their third most expensive player it is one of the best selling receivers we carry. It boasts plenty of facilities, and has much better sound performance than we have come to expect for the typical A/V receiver.
Please give us a call if you would like additional information regarding either product.

I’m looking for a very high quality DVD player to use with a normal size TV. Not blue ray, not dvd recording … something of the quality of a loewe xemix 5006 for a few hundred?

Hi Keith,
We don’t have any second-hand units at the moment, but we do have a demo (unboxed) QED Discsaver. This is a battery operated unit (although an inexpensive power supply can be added) which retails for $179, but we are selling it for $110. The other options are the Perreaux SXV1 on the specials list ($499 – down from $649) and the ever popular Musical Fidelity XLPS selling for $299.

Hi Stephen,
I have a couple of suggestions. The Marantz DV4100 we have listed is an excellent buy. Marantz is above all an audio company, and approaches their vision product from this perspective. They have a great reputation for their CD players, and pay the same attention to the drive mechanisms in their DVD players. Very good value at $249.
By far the best value is a second-hand (1 year old) NAD T585 DVD player. This is in mint condition, with remote and manual (no box). Initially retailed for $1,499, this would cost you $400.

Hi – I’m after a decent subwoofer. I have a Yamaha RXV-2065 (mostly used for music, but occasionally DVDs) and a set of 5 Bose Series 4 speakers. I understand the Bose subwoofers are not the best and was wondering what you would reccomend? Do you have something in the B&W range that won’t cost the earth? (I’ve heard the ASW-850 is good, but they sound expensive). Budget is about $1-2k if you have any ex-demo stock or other run out specials. Thanks.

Len says...
Hi Colleen,
The Bose Lifestyle speakers are a little unconventional in that the ‘sub-woofer’ is in fact more of a bass speaker which allows you to use the unobtrusive small high-frequency satellites. The drawback is that they cross over between the ‘sub’ and the satellites at a relatively high frequency. Bose do not offer the information but we estimate that this is at around 250Hz. A traditional sub has a maximum high frequency range of around 120Hz. This means that if you replace the existing Bose sub with another brand you are going to lose any material recorded between 120 – 250Hz.
If you are looking to improve on the bass response of the Bose it may mean replacing the total Bose speaker pack. If you wish to keep the high frequency drivers small and attractive I would suggest looking at the Focal Dome (http://www.focal-fr.com/) they are excellent performers and have a lower bass response of 80Hz, meaning that the addition of a good sub is a simple exercise. The Dome 5.0 speaker pack (5 x satellites without a sub) sells for $2,500. The 5.1 pack (5 x satellites with sub) is $3,000. One of the best value subs that we have is the Proficient S12, a 12” sub with a 250watt amplifier selling for $899.

My living room is 4.2 x 3.8 metres, no carpet, no curtains. I will have to upgrade to an LCD TV & thought about replacing my shelf system (Amplifier 35+35 watts or 38+38 watts and 6 ohms) with a receiver. None of the receivers do DAB+ & will probably destroy my old speakers, which sound good in the space. Is it still possible to just have stereo? I am a 30 year computer veteran, but audio is very confusing.
Posted on February 15, 2010 at 12:59 pm
Len says...
Hi Deb,
Firstly, if you have direct sunlight on the TV screen an LCD would be the way to go. (I am still a fan of plasma, but will acknowledge that under certain light conditions LCD is the way to go.)
Secondly you are correct, none of the receivers do DAB+ at this stage, any no-one seems to be in a hurry to announce that they will be first. However this is not an issue unless you are can avid AM listener. I still have a preference for the sound of FM transmission over DAB, but there is no denying that DAB is streets ahead of AM.
Finally, there is no problem with using a stereo receiver; in fact this appears to becoming more common with time. The audio out for any of your video sources (DVD, Foxtel etc) can be connected to the receiver, which is also connected to your existing speakers. Some of the better receivers such as the Yamaha RX497 also have inputs for video, although the connection between the receiver and the TV is not of the highest standard. Even with this receiver we would suggest taking the video signal direct to the screen. Most TV’s still sport an analogue out which will allow you to also connect the TV direct to the receiver.
My suggestion for a good quality, low cost receiver would be the Yamaha RX-397. It is a simple, reliable and good performing unit which retails for $599.

Hi
I saw 2 musical fidelity cd players on you clearance stock list today which is dated as january. ?are any still available.
I purchased a MF5.5 amp before christmas & want to get better cd than my old marantz cd48. I would spend up to $2k (gulp) I’d like to hear what you think would suit
Current speakers are Tannoy profile 633, which may also need replacing. I’m only really critical of there lack of bass, but that maybe only because of the cd Thanks Rob
PS. I’m in Perth.

Len says...
Hi Rob,
Both of these models are still available. We have a handful of the 1008 model left, but are coming to the end of the A5.5CD. I realise that the 5.5 is still a little outside of your budget, but it is an excellent player, and obviously a great match for the A5.5 amp. To ease the pain a little we could ship to you freight free.
The other player that you could consider is again a Marantz, the SA8003. It retails for $1,699. Build quality is superb, and while not reaching the levels of the MF, it is a very good sounding unit.

What is there in terms of subwoofers sub $1000 that would be worth looking at?
Cheers

Posted on April 25, 2010 at 1:45 pm
Len says...
Hi Jim,
There are a couple of suggestions I could make.
1) We have been running a special on Revox, which includes the Active Bass 2. This retailed for $2,499, and we have been selling them at $1,299. We are now down to our last (display) unit, and it has a small dent in one edge. I would let it go for $1,000 (bear in mind that it has an aluminum finish).
2) The best new unit at $1,000 or less comes from Richter. They do a 12”, 200 watt sub – The Thor – (with a rated lower frequency response of 19Hz(?)) which sells for $999. There is a 10”, 100 watt version – the Krakatoa – (22Hz) for $699.
3) We have a secondhand AS6 B&W sub for $800. We believe that this unit initially sold for $2,500, but could be wrong. It is in good condition.

Len says...
Hi Albert,
I think the best amp going at the moment for what you are looking to do is the Peachtree Nova. It features an 80watt MOSFET power amp (real watts), a valve pre-amp stage and a very high quality 24bit/96hKz DAC. It has four digital and three analogue inputs and a Class ‘A’ tube headphone amp. (See link below.)
This is really a very good sounding amp, and would work well with the Spendors. The combination will play loud, but not blisteringly so. Low level listing would be a treat.
It also comes with a remote, and the on-off function can be uploaded to a learning remote if you are using one. It even has a switchable home theatre by-pass in case you wanted to integrate it with your Denon.

Len, I bought the Musical Fidelity A5.5 CD player from you recently, and am now looking for a digital tuner to add to the MFA5 amp and CD setup, what do you recommend and I’m also interested in how the ‘Isolation Platforms’ you have for $299 perform.
Thanks for your help again,
Lachlan.
Posted on September 21, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Len says...
Hi Lachlan,
I am presuming that you mean a DAB+ unit when you mention digital (or are you referring to the more traditional AM/FM tuner?) If it is a DAB+/FM unit you are after I would recommend the Arcam T32. This is a great FM tuner, but also has DAB+ – Hi Fi World called it the best DAB+ tuner that they had heard. It sells for $1,299.
The alternative to this is the Sangean WFT1D+. This is also FM/DAB+, but also offers streaming as well. Very versatile, and at the current selling price of $499 it offers great value. The only downsides is that they are out of stock for a month, and the performance is certainly not up there with the Arcam.
Hi Lachlan,
The Isolation devices you asked about did work well, but we have now run out. In the meantime we have been having tremendous success with a new product called Vibrapod (See our new products section http://www.lenwallisaudio.com/new-products ). Most of the sales we make for this product are to people who have purchased a set to try them out, and have then come back for sets for all their components. They are inexpensive, and work well.
