Here’s an example of how technology helps in our everyday life.

The scene: Winter; a cold Sunday morning. I’m staying in bed reading the paper. That was what happened last weekend, and it’s pretty normal this time of year.

As one of my interests in life is music, my attention was grabbed by an article about an Irish music group that I have never heard of before and which “bears” a native name: Grizzly Bear. After the first two lines my interest was increasing when the words “harmony” and “folk” dragged me 30 years back to my younger days playing in a music band. We were doing a lot of harmony and folklore music in those days.

But the most interesting thing happened next, when I picked up my iPod Touch and selected the Sonos controller application, searched an on-line music server for “Grizzly Bear” and then found myself listening to the group through my Focal speakers connected to a SONOS player, even as I was still reading the article!! When I’d finished reading, I was able to touch the YouTube icon in my iPod to find video of the group performing live.

In the space of few minutes I have used three different media products that have given me a wonderful fusion of information and entertainment that nourishes my soul.

I have also realised how extraordinary and useful the technology in our everyday life can be.

Note: I am still looking for Grizzly Bear’s latest album in the shops so I can listen to them uncompressed on my Hi-Fi system.
